Immense stature, eloquence and sly look generous, George Wilson, who has just died at the age of 88 years on Wednesday was one of the last representatives of the French theater after the war.
Born in 1921 to a father of Irish musician, George Wilson is time the saxophone before attending drama classes at school in the Rue Blanche. Initiated in 1952 by Jean Vilar in the company of the NPT, he plays Lorenzaccio at the Avignon festival alongside Gérard Philipe.
The meeting with Jean Vilar will determine the course of his career. He succeeded in 1963 as head of the Théâtre de Chaillot - formerly Theater People. Here he interprets and stages both classical and contemporary theater: Molière, Brecht, Sartre and Valle Inclan ...
In 1972, George Wilson leaves with some regret the direction of the NPT. He then plays regularly with his friend Jacques Dufilho and the sides of Suzanne Flon or of Delphine Seyrig. In 1979 he shared the stage with Rufus and Michel Bouquet, interpreting an endearing Vladimir in Waiting for Godot by Beckett, directed by Otomar Krejca Festival d'Avignon.
In film, he turns in some sixty films, including Max and scrap of Claude Sautet, Tintin and the mystery of the golden fleece in which he plays Captain Haddock and more recently in The Public Enemy No. 1 where it is a businessman kidnapped by Jacques Mesrine. In The Wyvern, a film based on the novel by Marcel Aime, he directs his son Lambert Wilson. A few years later, the latter will reciprocate by putting it on stage in Berenice.
George Wilson belonged to the lineage of actors henormous, loudmouthed but also capable of nuance and restraint. Imposing presence and loud. The most important thing is to really see, if you are hungry or not. Now this may sound strange, but often confused with thirst and hunger of the brain, so you can meet their only warm drinks or a glass of water. Boredom can also be a mistake, so here, looking for signs.
